Two different questions
Batting strike rate measures scoring speed: runs per 100 balls faced. Batting average estimates runs scored per dismissal. A batter can score quickly but be dismissed often, or accumulate runs more slowly while remaining at the crease longer.
Strike-rate formula
Strike rate = (runs scored ÷ balls faced) × 100. If a batter scores 30 from 20 balls, the calculation is (30 ÷ 20) × 100 = 150.00. It means the batter scored at a pace equivalent to 150 runs per 100 balls over that sample.
Batting-average formula
Batting average = total runs scored ÷ times dismissed. If a player scores 240 runs and is dismissed 8 times, the average is 30.00. Use dismissals rather than innings played because an innings ending not out does not count as a dismissal.
Why context matters
Neither number is a complete player assessment. Format, batting position, match situation, pitch, opposition and sample size can change how a statistic should be interpreted. A quick cameo may have a high strike rate based on few balls; a batter's average can be influenced by not-out innings and role.
Worked comparison
Imagine Batter A scores 30 from 20 balls and is dismissed. Their strike rate for that innings is 150.00. Batter B scores 30 from 40 balls and is dismissed; the strike rate is 75.00. Both scored the same number of runs, but at different speeds. To compare averages, you would need their total runs and dismissal counts over the period being studied.
Common mistakes
Do not use team overs as the balls faced for a batter. Do not divide batting runs by innings played when calculating average. Do not compare a short sample to a long career without noting the difference. Make sure statistics refer to the same format and time period.
